Drilling and service rig personnel work at gas and oil rigs. They perform what can be termed as general labor duties and are tasked with operating specialized equipment. On an average they earn a salary of 51,384 dollars and their average wage is 27.33 dollars. They need to have passed at least the 10th grade to be considered eligible to work in this industry. They are not regulated however and there is only medium demand for them. At present there are 21,600 individuals employed in this domain. They have a below-average outlook and there are only 332 new positions available as of this writing along with 24 job listings.

Their main duties

Drilling and rig personnel set up drilling rigs and use them so that they can explore sites from which they would be able to extract oil and gas. Each rig is made up of a surface equipment such as draw-works and derrick so that a drill pipe can be provided with the force that is necessary for boring a hole into the earth. Once the drilling rig gets to the layer of earth from which oil and gas can be extracted they remove it from that site. After that the service rig personnel finish building the well over there.

The duties of drilling and service rig laborers

They are supposed to be the junior-most members of the crew. They can be categorized into leasehands and floorhands. Leasehands work on drilling rigs and perform housekeeping activities such as cleaning ice from sidewalks, putting rig equipment and tools away after they have been used, and cleaning them as well. Floorhands work on service rigs and drilling rigs. There are normally a couple of them in crews of five individuals. They normally clean tools, rig equipment work areas, and tool sheds, and make sure that they are organized.

The duties of drilling and service rig operators

There are three main categories of professionals in this particular regard — motorhands who work on drilling rigs, derrickhands who work on service rigs and drilling rigs, and drillers, also known as operators, who work on service rigs and drilling rigs as well. Motorhands perform a wide range of duties such as regularly maintaining the following mechanical equipment:

· drilling rig engines

· transmissions

· heating systems

· diesel electric motors and generators

· hydraulic systems

Derrickhands work as per the direction of the drillers. Drillers are supposed to operate the draw-works, pumps, and rotary equipment.

The working conditions of these professionals vary depending on the task that they are performing. A lot in this case is also dependent on where the rig is located and how the weather is over there. These professionals also need to be strength in the sense that they must be able to lift at least 20 kg weight. In most cases, rig personnel work outdoors and in remote locations. In most cases they do so all around the year. They are also exposed to the extremes of weather, noise, dirt, fumes, and dust common around these rigs.
